What is Canon Law ?
The latin term « jus canonicum » is translated into English as « Canon Law ». This means all the laws and regulations governing the organisation of the Catholic Church. The word " canonical " comes from the Greek meaning κανών model, or rule . It distinguishes ecclesial law from civil law which has adopted the word νόμος that gave the term " standard " in English, to designate custom or law.
What are Canon Law studies ?
Canon Law studies are concerned with the organisation of the Church they do not directly concern dogma nor theology as such.
Who is a canon lawyer ?
When we speak of a "canonist", we refer to a specialist in internal laws of the Catholic Church.
