[EPISODE 9] – Susanne Möhring
DOMUNI, A FLEXIBLE, DEMANDING, INTERNATIONAL, AND PROFOUNDLY HUMAN UNIVERSITY
Suzanne is an entrepreneur based in Sonndorf, Germany. A native German speaker, she is currently pursuing the first year of a Master of Arts in Philosophy at Domuni Universitas, following a long academic journey in Theology and Religious Studies.
A Long-Term Quest for Meaning
Since the early 2000s, my desire to deepen my understanding of theology and philosophy has never left me. However, as a full-time self-employed professional, it was impossible for me to consider on-campus university studies. I was looking for a serious, academically demanding program that could nevertheless be reconciled with an intensive professional life.
At the time, I explored all available options in the German language. The only accessible program was offered by the German Bishops’ Conference, primarily intended for deacons and pastoral workers. I successfully completed this program in 2011. While it was intellectually enriching, it did not lead to a recognized university degree, but only to a certificate. I knew that my academic journey was not yet complete, and so I continued my search.
Discovering Domuni: A Decisive Turning Point
In 2016, after extensive online research, I came across Domuni Universitas. It was a genuine relief. Domuni offers fully online degree programs, with a completely flexible pace of study, and—most importantly—in English, the foreign language I master best. As I read the curriculum details, I was immediately convinced.
I found exactly what I had been seeking for years: an international university, academically rigorous, yet perfectly adapted to the realities of modern professional life.
A Highly Professional First Impression
From the very beginning—starting with enrollment and the first courses—my impression was extremely positive. The e-learning platform was technically robust, well-structured, and easy to navigate. At a time when many online programs relied solely on videoconferencing or email exchanges, Domuni Universitas already offered a comprehensive and coherent digital learning environment.
Asynchronous Flexibility: A Unique Strength
What I value most at Domuni Universitas is the possibility of studying in a fully asynchronous learning mode. As a self-employed professional, my schedule varies greatly depending on the time of year. There are weeks when I must set my studies aside, and others when I can dedicate myself to them intensively.
“Domuni allowed me to find my own rhythm, without artificial pressure. This flexibility is not a minor detail; it lies at the very heart of its pedagogy.”
With hindsight, I can also state that the academic quality of teaching is extremely high. Compared with certain German universities, the level is, in my view, equivalent or even superior. Moreover, the degrees awarded by Domuni Universitas and the Angelicum are officially recognized and highly regarded in Germany.
Demanding and Stimulating Courses
Every course I have taken at Domuni Universitas has been both enriching and intellectually stimulating. Naturally, this depends on individual sensitivities, but I was particularly struck by the courses in Catholic Social Thought and Social Political Philosophy, within my Religious Studies program integrating philosophy and theology.
Transformative Skills Development
One of the greatest challenges for me was methodological. Coming from the German university system, I had to adapt to different structures of thought and alternative ways of constructing academic arguments and scholarly work.
Above all, Domuni Universitas taught me two essential skills: rigorous self-organization and increased self-confidence. Submitting an assignment knowing that there is “only one attempt” encourages one to move beyond the fear of failure. I learned to take responsibility for my intellectual choices, to trust my work, and to clearly understand methodological expectations.
A Concrete Impact on Professional Life
The skills developed at Domuni Universitas have had a direct impact on my professional life. The ability to structure complex ideas clearly and to communicate in a precise and well-argued manner is particularly valuable when working with international teams.
I have also developed a more balanced relationship with assessment and feedback. I now understand that results depend not only on personal investment, but also on the quality of communication between the evaluator and the evaluated. This critical distance has been extremely formative.
My current objective is clear: to successfully obtain my Master’s degree in Philosophy. What comes next will largely depend on my Master’s thesis and the intellectual directions it reveals. In any case, I already know that this academic journey will have a lasting impact on my professional future.
Advice to Future Students
“I recommend Domuni without hesitation—and I already do so.”
Domuni Universitas is a remarkable example of what a university can be in a postmodern world: flexible, academically demanding, international, and profoundly human.
People from all backgrounds, all ages, all cultures, and all social levels work together there at a very high academic level.
“It is rare. It is valuable. And, in my view, exceptional.”
If I were to give advice to future students, I would say: be prepared to work independently. Establish a regular working rhythm. Learn to distinguish what is essential from what is secondary in your courses. Do not confuse time spent with intellectual depth: sometimes, a sound idea emerges in a single day and leads to excellent work. At other times, one may spend weeks on a text without reaching the same level of insight.
