An Unexpected Encounter That Opened the Way

“A Brother from the Shalom community in Brazil told me about Domuni.”

I discovered Domuni in Brazil, thanks to a Brother from the Shalom community. Intrigued, I looked it up online and soon got in touch with Dr. Michel Van Aerde, who was rector at the time.

What struck me right away was the academic quality of the Dominican formation. But it was especially my conversation with Dr. Van Aerde that made the difference. He clearly conveyed Domuni’s unique character, intellectual rigor, and excellence in distance learning.

A Flexible Model that Encourages Initiative

“Being able to go deeper into topics that matter to you makes the work meaningful.”

One of the major strengths of the programme is its flexibility. You study at your own pace, with monthly research assignments that encourage active learning and responsibility.

Another strong point: the structure is academic without being overly rigid. The oral exam at the end of the semester is a particularly good way to review and consolidate everything you’ve learned.

A Formation that Reshapes the Way You Think

“I learned to read differently, to reflect, and to structure my thought.”

This online formation helped me grow in self-discipline, autonomy, and organisation. But beyond that, it opened me up to a philosophical approach grounded in questioning rather than conclusions.

These skills are essential in my mission. As a missionary, being familiar with major philosophical figures and frameworks allows me to engage in meaningful dialogue with those who are far from any religious perspective. It’s a way of opening conversation with the world, without immediately introducing faith.

Serving in Rome During a Year of Grace

“Being in mission in Rome during the Jubilee is a real blessing.”

I am currently serving in Rome, which is a particular grace—especially during this Jubilee year.

This formation at Domuni was not a final destination. Next year, I plan to begin studies in theology, which is the natural continuation of my philosophical training. It’s both an intellectual journey and a way to deepen my missionary vocation.

A Distance Experience, but Never Alone

“Excellent support, and rich modules—even in English.”

I would absolutely recommend Domuni. It’s been a deeply human and intellectual experience. Thanks to distance learning, I was able to pursue my studies without interrupting my mission—something I couldn't have done in a traditional setup.

I’m especially grateful to my tutor, whose guidance and feedback were always of great quality, semester after semester. I also appreciated the English-language modules, which gave my formation an international dimension.

Advice for the Road Ahead

“Don’t be afraid of the text—enter into it.”

To future students I’d say: don’t be intimidated by philosophy texts. You’ll learn to engage with them. Follow the methodological guidance—especially the advice to make summaries and note cards. That helped me tremendously.

And most importantly: stay in dialogue—with professors, with your tutor. These exchanges are what make the online learning experience at Domuni truly dynamic and formative.
