[EPISODE 10] – Dr. Isaac Mutelo O.P.
An Academic Vocation at the Service of the International Mission of DOMUNI Universitas
Dr. Isaac Mutelo O.P. is a theologian based in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is an Associate Professor of Moral Theology and an author, engaged for many years in higher education and pastoral ministry. He continues his academic work at DOMUNI Universitas as a mentor, accompanying students across several continents.
My Encounter with the Vision of DOMUNI Universitas
What particularly drew me to DOMUNI Universitas was its vision: a vision of education that is accessible, without compromising academic rigor.
Domuni carries an important mission: to make higher education accessible beyond geographical and social boundaries.
For me, this accessibility is inseparable from a rigorous framework grounded in high academic standards, in-depth ethical reflection, and openness to intercultural dialogue.
My experience within the university has been marked by the quality of this intellectual environment. I have found there genuine academic discipline, as well as a space for dialogue where students from diverse cultures, contexts, and backgrounds meet. This diversity is not merely a human asset; it is also an intellectual one. It enables me to broaden my perspectives and deepen my understanding of the subjects under study.
Mentorship: Guiding in Order to Inspire
I attach particular importance to the concept of mentorship. In my view, education does not simply consist in transmitting knowledge, but in accompanying students in the development of their capacity to think independently.
“The objective is to help students become independent thinkers, responsible for their own reflection.”
I give concrete expression to this approach notably through exchanges in academic forums, discussions, and personalized guidance. These spaces lie at the heart of the study experience. They allow students to confront their ideas, to raise questions, and to progressively construct their own thought. As a mentor, I play an essential role in guiding, encouraging, and supporting this process.
Distance Learning: Freedom and Discipline
Distance learning, which characterizes DOMUNI Universitas, offers valuable flexibility. It enables professionals, members of religious life, and students geographically distant from traditional university centers to access quality education. However, this flexibility also requires significant personal commitment. I emphasize the necessity of discipline, consistency, and active participation.
In my view, the students who succeed most fully are those who invest themselves wholeheartedly in their formation. They participate in discussions, respect the pace of work, and consider their studies as a genuine process of intellectual and personal growth.
An International Community That Transforms
One of the aspects that has most profoundly marked my experience at DOMUNI Universitas is the diversity of the student community. I recall moments when, within a single forum, students from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas shared their reflections. These exchanges concretely illustrate the university’s international dimension.
“These dialogues make it possible to deepen reflection and to challenge certain ideas in a constructive manner.”
They testify to Domuni’s capacity to create a truly borderless academic space, where encounters between cultures nourish the search for truth.
Over the course of my engagement, I have also been impressed by the seriousness and motivation of the students. Despite the constraints inherent in distance learning, they demonstrate considerable rigor and a genuine desire to learn. Their commitment confirms, in my view, the relevance of the pedagogical model of DOMUNI Universitas.
Through his journey, Dr. Isaac Mutelo O.P. fully embodies the spirit of DOMUNI Universitas. His commitment as a mentor illustrates Domuni’s mission: to form women and men capable of critical reflection, open to dialogue, and ready to place their competencies at the service of their communities.
